Carnegie Mellon University is world-renowned for its school of computer science. The University believes computational thinking to be a necessary fundamental skill used by everyone in the world and aspires to lead in computer science research and education that has an impact in the real world. The school has recently received $10 million for a new research facility in the university's new computer science complex. The building will include the Gates Center for Computer Science and will be used for technology research. Carnegie Mellon's professors have won numerous distinguished awards for computer hardware and software, such as the A.M. Turing Award.

In 1963, Mecklenburg College and the Central Industrial Education Center were merged to establish Central Piedmont Community College, one of the first of the 58 colleges in the NC Community College System under the leadership of Dr. Richard Hagemeyer.
