500 Startups' Rainbow Round & Flatirons LGBTQ Tech Meetup will be co-hosting a Diversity In Tech panel at Galvanize. The event will feature diverse CEOs, entrepreneurs, and prominent techies in the Boulder-Denver area discussing their experiences with diversity in tech. Galvanize's gSchool will do an open house at 5:30p prior to the main event (starting at 6p) to bring awareness to their programs and diversity-focused scholarships. Refreshments will be served during a reception after the panel. This should be a great event uniting several amazing organizations in Boulder and Silicon Valley working towards increasing diversity in tech.

We have three steps this year related to this initiative: 1. Catherine Ashcraft came to the IU campus to give talks on unconscious bias in technology environments. 2. We designed and implemented a "required for all" workshop for our 250+ teaching assistants. It is permanently in place for all new teaching assistants each semester. 3. We have a group of students developing an eBadge on this topic to be used in classrooms, training and more.

Despite the growing demand and tremendous opportunities in the job market, cybersecurity remains an area where there is significant shortage of skilled professionals regionally, nationally and internationally. Even worse, women’s representation in this male-dominated field of security is alarmingly low. Through the WiCyS community and activities we expect to raise awareness about the importance and nature of cybersecurity career. We hope to generate interest among students to consider cybersecurity as a viable and promising career option. With support from National Science Foundation, Award #1303441 (Capacity Building in Cybersecurity: Broadening Participation of Women In Cybersecurity through the Women in Cybersecurity Conference and Professional Development), WiCyS is an effort to bring together women (students/faculty/researchers/professionals) in cybersecurity from academia, research and industry for sharing of knowledge/experience, networking and mentoring. Any individual or organization interested in supporting recruiting and retention efforts for women in cybersecurity is encouraged to participate.

We used the Scratch program to deliver a unique paired programming experience for mothers, daughters, and sisters. Providing workbooks of activities, we challenged the participants to learn basic functionality of the Scratch program and then apply the skill sets they learned to build a unique program that solved a problem within their life or community. Allowing the participants time to work through a set of standard skills activities gave them the confidence they needed to embrace the end project where they needed to apply critical thinking skills in addition to their newly learned programming skills. Pairing the participants with family members gave them quality time to spend together working on a mutual project with the expectation that they would encourage each other to get involved with additional programming activities after the lunch and learn.
