Affinity Group Alliance Meeting 1 Agenda
Tuesday, May 21: 9:15 AM - 12:15 PM
9:15 AM – 10:30 AM Affinity Groups Influencing the Broader Public via Counterpublics
Come explore how and affinity groups can move beyond traditional networking roles to also function as “counterpublics." Counterpublics are places where groups who are underrepresented in the larger “public” (e.g., workplace or technology field at large) can temporarily retreat, recharge, discuss common problems, and rehearse (or strategize) how they might work together to address these problems in the larger public. We will look at the potential for these counterpublics to drive organizational change and to counteract common problems in larger tech environments, such as stereotype threat.
As part of this session, we will start with a quick overview of the vision, mission, and objectives of the Alliance – there will also be an update on leadership, members, projects and goals for the meeting, including an opportunity for you to introduce yourselves, your organizations, and what you hope to take-away from the Summit generally and our Alliance meeting specifically.
Finally, there will be a high-level overview of existing NCWIT resources successfully used within Affinity Groups. Members will share with each other how to best use resources to solve specific problems. Updates on current and future NCWIT resources will be provided.
