Thanks to all of those who came prepared to leverage their efforts for encouraging more girls and women to pursue computing. The 2014 NCWIT Summit on Women and IT: practices and ideas to revolutionize computing took place at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa in Newport Beach, California from May 19-21, 2014.
The 2014 NCWIT Summit marked our 10th anniversary — a time to recognize the significant accomplishments of our heroes and evangelists. Hundreds of change leaders from our community of educators, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and social scientists received research, ideas, and action items for increasing girls’ and women’s participation in computing.
Tami Mallett is Vice President and Enterprise Group CIO for Hewlett Packard.
Tami oversees the delivery of application development and support, customer service and technology innovations and solutions to meet the needs of the HP Enterprise Group, including the server, storage, networking, and technology services teams, as well as the enterprise sales force. She is also responsible for delivering information technology for pan-HP functions such as sales, quote-to-cash, product quality, R&D, and growth markets.
Lucy Sanders is CEO and Co-founder of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and also serves as Executive-in-Residence for the ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU).
Chelsea Clinton, Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation, works with her parents, President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, to drive the vision and work of the Clinton Foundation. Over the past 12 years, the Foundation has built partnerships with great purpose among governments, businesses, NGOs, and individuals everywhere to strengthen health systems in developing countries, fight climate change, expand economic opportunity in Africa, Latin America, and the United States, and help Americans live healthier lives.
Andrea Jung is President and Chief Executive Officer of Grameen America, the fastest-growing microfinance organization in the United States. Ms. Jung, the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Avon Products, Inc.
Maria Bello, an award winning actor (The Cooler, Coyote Ugly, History of Violence, Sisters), and having just won the Best Ensemble Award for 2013 for Prisoners, is an internationally renowned activist for social justice and women’s rights around the world, with a special focus on Haiti, where she is US Global Ambassador for Women of Haiti and served on the Haiti Economic Development Advisory Panel alongside Haitian President Michel Martelly, Ambassador Danielle St. Lot, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus.
Veteran Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile is an adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist, television political commentator, Vice Chair of Voter Registration and Participation at the Democratic National Committee, and former interim National Chair of the Democratic National Committee as well as the former chair of the DNC’s Voting Rights Institute.
A seasoned writer-producer, design thinker, and creative strategist, Mitch Baranowski co-founded BBMG with longtime friend Raphael Bemporad in January 2003 to help create disruptive business solutions and delightful brand experiences. He has overall responsibility for the brand innovation firm’s creative direction and operations.
In her seven years at Google, Iveta has worked on various initiatives across People Operations (what other companies call HR), including compensation, performance management, and education outreach. She is currently working on a new initiative to share some of our learnings about people processes and strategy with teams outside of Google. Prior to Google, Iveta worked as a community college instructor and nonprofit manager. She holds a BS in Human Development from Cornell University and an MBA from the University of California, Irvine.
Erin Gavin is a Senior Manager of Government Affairs for Qualcomm Incorporated. In this role, Erin manages Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach™ programs in Southeast Asia and supports programs in India and Africa. Her focus is on women and entrepreneurship and she leads Wireless Reach’s global marketing and event efforts.
Anna is the President of Shades of Success, a Boston-based talent development organization that partners with professional women, helping them become effective team members, mentors and leaders. Using a unique methodology that combines assessment, skill development, experiential learning and coaching, Shades of Success helps clients navigate change and maximize their impact through the exploration and understanding of micro behaviors.
Andrea is the co -founder of DevelopHer. Her goal is to ignite a transformation in the entrepreneurship communities by making it more diverse and inclusive. Andrea co-organized Common Pitch Chile, where over three days more than 10,000 participants gathered in Santiago Chile to learn about social entrepreneurship with the participation of Al Gore and music by Devendra Banhart and Devotchka among others. Andrea’s second event, SP Women, focused on women in the startup community.
Dr. Mark Guzdial is a Professor in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on learning sciences and technology, specifically, computing education research. His books on Media Computation teach programming through creating and manipulating digital media. Media Computation has had a significant impact on retention at adopting institutions. He was the original developer of "Swiki," the first wiki designed for educational use.
Raquell M Holmes, Ph.D., is founder of improvscience which was featured in NatureJobs (Jan, 2014) for its innovative use of improvisation to help scientists communicate and collaborate more easily and effectively. Holmes is Research Assistant Professor at the Center for Computational Science at Boston University; Research Associate Professor at the Mathematical Computational Modeling Sciences Center at Arizona State University and faculty of the East Side Institute, NY. She creates and manages programs that recruit and retain women and minorities in computational sciences.
As part of the team at Google whose mission is to inspire the next generation of computer scientists, Hai manages the RISE Awards and research on computer science education. Prior to Google, he held roles at Roll Global, the German Federal Foreign Office, and the Fulbright Commission in Berlin. He worked on evaluation of educational programs, employee engagement and wellness, international human resources, and matters of geopolitical importance like the UN resolution declaring 2008 the “International Year of the Potato.”
Dr. Farnam Jahanian serves as the National Science Foundation Assistant Director for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate. He guides CISE in its mission to uphold the nation's leadership in scientific discovery and engineering innovation through its support of fundamental research in computer and information science and engineering and transformative advances in cyberinfrastructure.
Dr. Michael Kimmel is an American sociologist, specializing in gender studies. He holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the Stony Brook University in New York and is the founder and editor of the academic journal Men and Masculinities. Michael is a spokesperson of the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS). He is considered a leading figure in the academic subfield of men's studies.
Dr. Ed Lazowska holds the Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, where he also serves as the Founding Director of the University of Washington eScience Institute.
Dr. Christopher J. Metzler is Senior Associate Dean for Applied Management Degrees at the School of Continuing Studies and Associate Dean for Human Resources and Diversity Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Margaret A. Neale is the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management. She was the Graduate School of Business John G. McCoy-Banc One Corporation Professor of Organizations and Dispute Resolution from 2000-2012. Trust Faculty Fellow in 2011-2012 and in 2000-2001. From 1997-2000, she was the Academic Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Prior to joining Stanford’s faculty in 1995, she was the J.L. and Helen Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Dispute Resolution and Organizations at the J.L.
Debra J. Richardson is founding Ted and Janice Smith Dean of the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California—Irvine. She joined the UCI faculty in 1987, and became chair of the ICS department in July 2000.
Bobby Schnabel is Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Computing Machinery, the oldest and largest society of computing professionals and students. Prior to beginning as CEO of ACM in November 2015, Bobby was Dean of the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University from 2007-2015 and a member of the computer science faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1977-2007.
Jeff Forbes is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Computer Science and an Associate Dean of Trinity College at Duke University. He received his BS and PhD in computer science from Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, respectively. From 2011-2014, he served as a Program Director for the Education & Workforce program in the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (NSF CISE), managing programs that address the critical and complex issues of education and broadening participation in computing.
Tommy Simpson, a Director within AT&T’s Information Technology organization, is responsible for leading its Technology Development Program, AT&T’s college new hire and intern development program. The TDP program is a national 18 month entry-level IT hiring program composed of highly talented and motivated individuals with various strategic IT skills. Tommy previously managed the end to end testing of AT&T’s Mobility and Uverse products, ensuring new products and functionality deployed with no interruption to existing customers or service.
Rane Johnson-Stempson is a certified partnership broker and Principal Research Director at Microsoft Research. She engages with academics worldwide to identify high-impact areas for research investigations. She is working on projects that use technology to transform how we learn about history and how we eradicate human trafficking. Johnson also serves as Microsoft Research’s lead for growing, attracting, and retaining women in research, science, and engineering.
Carrie van Heyst is the co-founder of DevelopHer and was the co-founder of the gameboard company StockitToYa! Carrie is an experienced event producer and has been a driver behind such events as the Microsoft CEO Summit, TIME magazine’s Future of Life Summit, and the TIME/ABC News Summit on Obesity. She is the CEO of VHG, which been in business for 20 years, and has been featured in the NY Times
