Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
The Department of Computer Science is home to one of the largest groups of undergraduate majors in the university as well as to graduate students in Blacksburg and at the Northern Virginia Center. Students receive outstanding instruction from dedicated teachers, and undergraduate and graduate students alike join faculty members to perform research in a variety of facilities, including a state-of-the-art technology building. The B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees provide in-depth exposure to the core body of knowledge in the computing discipline, preparing graduates for careers or further study. The computer science major is software oriented, in contrast to the hardware-oriented computer engineering major. Computer science majors design and develop software, from the software systems that control the functioning of the computer such as operating systems and compilers to applications software for areas such as numerical analysis, graphics, and data bases.
