Did You Know?

Did you know that at many schools, computer science is fast becoming the hottest major on campus? According to Network World, “The nation’s best undergraduate computer science programs are bracing for a record number of applications this fall, as more high school seniors are lured by plentiful jobs, six-figure starting salaries and a hipster image fostered by the likes of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.”
At schools like Carnegie Mellon University, Harvey Mudd College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which have top ratings from U.S. News & World Report, admissions officers and computer science professors are seeing so much interest in their programs that they expect to set a new record for undergraduate applications this year.
If you want to get on the computing-is-hot bandwagon, now is the time: December 4-10, 2011, marks Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), which gives you a chance to share your support for increased and improved computing education in an influential way. Pledge your support, sign up for events, or use the next two weeks to plan a celebration of your own.
Want to know how the National Science Foundation is celebrating CSEdWeek? It’s launching CSBytes, a one-page biweekly newsletter designed to spotlight what’s “new, wow, and now” in computer science. Aimed at high school educators and students, CS Bytes will be filled with highlights of innovative computer science research, and links to interactive activities, videos, and snapshots. The series will emphasize how computer science permeates and improves our lives and supports progress in many other disciplines.
You can sign up for the CSBytes newsletter at http://www.nsf.gov/cise/csbytes.
Have a great holiday!
