The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to teach and conduct research in computer science and to provide service to Old Dominion University, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the United States of America, and the international community. Pursuant to this mission, the faculty of the Department of Computer Science:
offers programs of study that produce graduates with Bachelor of Science(B.S.), Master of Science(M.S.),Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D.) degrees in computer science, and a Master's degree in computer engineering.
conducts research in computer science and publishes results of that research in the open scientifc and engineering literature,
teaches courses in computer science required by students seeking degrees in other departments and disciplines within Old Dominion University,
participates in the governance of the Department of Computer Science, the College of Sciences, and Old Dominion University, and
takes part in the work of professional societies and peer review panels.

Penn State's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, formed in 1993, combines the strengths of the Department of Computer Science and the Computer Engineering Program. The computer science component originated in the 1960's, and the computer engineering program in the 1980's. Faculty emphasize the theoretical and practical application of computation and computer systems to the needs of society. Research interests cover the broad areas of architecture, computational theory, computer applications, and software systems.
