Activity Description

We are trying to educate female students about the many opportunities in Computing and to eliminate misperceptions about work in Computing. Computer professionals are NOT all geeks and nerds who are sitting in window-less offices, doing -- who knows what -- for 12 hours a day.

We are specifically NOT trying to recruit students to our institution, and we tell them, we are happy if they go anywhere they would like to go.

For this purpose we are sending female MS students to high schools to give one hour presentations to the students. Dr. Geller also visited and presented at several high schools.

The student presentations include a practical demonstration explaining how a computer works, by a role play exercise.

Progress On Activity
This is ongoing. Most recently Dr. Geller visit Union City High School, in Union City, New Jersey and presented to three groups of students, one of them mostly female.
Lessons Learned
Recently we experienced a problem with a student who did not have English as hist first language and who had a hard time following the presentations. We need to look for possible creating a Hispanic group in the future.
