Goal statement
The goal of this activity is to provide an introduction to computing and design to middle school girls in Baltimore, MD, to inspire them to continue learning and being involved in computer science as they get older. We are filling a void in Baltimore of very few tech camps for girls. We also hope to increase the number of Aspirations in Computing applications from Baltimore city students, as we get very few from the city each year.
Activity Description
This camp is a 2 week day camp, Monday - Friday, 10AM-4PM. The camp is held on our campus in the computer science department's introductory lab. The camp materials are based on Mt. Holyoke's iDesign, CS UnPlugged, Hour of Code, and TechGirlz workshops. Participants are 7-8th grade girls in Baltimore. Participants learn to 3D print, work with Arduinos and Squarewear microcontrollers, and design websites. All of these activities except the 3D printing involves coding, although no prior experience is expected. More information is at http://balticode.cs.loyola.edu.
Progress On Activity
We submitted for and were awarded funding through a local organization that funds programs for K-12 students in Baltimore. We are currently planning and implementing the camp, as well as recruiting students.
