Our NCWIT November 2008 practices workshop focuses on the role that "nontraditional" or "alternative" educational pathways play in preparing women and underrepresented minorities for the information technology (IT) workforce. Here's a brief look at some of the more than 20 confirmed speakers:

  • Ms. JD Hoye, President, National Academy Foundation
Ms. Hoye will discuss her nationwide network of career-themed, college-prep academies and how the career-focused approach can bring underrepresented groups to IT careers.
  • Dr. Lisa Servon, Senior Research Fellow, Center for Work-Life Policy
Dr. Servon will discuss the Center's latest research on technical women, focusing on women who switch into IT from other functional areas.
  • Dr. A Nicki Washington, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Howard University
Dr. Washington will discuss her own path to computer science and alternative pathways to an IT career.
  • Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
Dr. Wheelan will make remarks and moderate a discussion on barriers and solutions to leveraging alternative pathways in computing education and the workforce.
