
Angela Lai
Background
Angela is currently the Vice President of Engineering of Payments at Google, and has held this position since 2011. Prior to this position, Angela was a member of the AdWords engineering team at Google. She started out as an individual contributor on this team, and worked her way up to becoming an engineering director. She has been involved in the launch of several projects during her time at Google, including Android Marketplace, Google Apps for Business, and Google Wallet for NFC/Contactless Payments.
In 1999 Angela founded Generic Media Inc. which was funded by Softbank and Sony. Generic Media was responsible for the development of a real-time video transcoding engine that was utilized by companies such as Canon USA and NIT. Although the company was ultimately liquidated, Angela says that it was an invaluable learning experience.
Prior to the start-up of Generic Media, Angela worked as a Principal Engineer for Silicon Graphics Inc. During her time here, Angela was responsible for the architecture of their audio and video software systems.
Angela was born in Hong Kong and came to the United States for college in 1990. Angela holds a Master of Science in Engineering with and emphasis in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with an emphasis in Computer Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania.
