Associate Professor of Computer Science

Background

David Evans has taught two large open courses for Udacity, including an introductory Computer Science course that enrolled more than 265,000 students from over 180 countries, ranging in age from six months to 88 years, from truck drivers to neurosurgeons, chefs, and math professors.

While Vice President of Education for Udacity, he had the opportunity to work with many extraordinary teachers to develop MOOCs and saw some of the things that worked and didn't work in building learning communities. Evans is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Virginia where he leads the security research group. He is the author of an introductory computing textbook and was the founding director of the Interdisciplinary Major in Computer Science, which became the largest major taught by the Engineering school. Evans won the commonwealth of Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award and was program co-chair of the 2009 and 2010 IEEE Symposia on Security and Privacy.
