What Are You Doing March 8?

Girl with globe Do you know what you’re doing on March 8? We hope you’ve got something special planned, because March 8 happens to be International Women’s Day (IWD.) Although it’s long been popular around the globe as a day to recognize women, IWD increasingly is being designated by U.S. organizations as a day for celebrating women’s visibility and involvement, especially in male-dominated sectors like technology.

Learn more about the history of International Women’s Day or find out about upcoming events of all kinds.)

International Women's Day-in-a-Box Planning a celebration of women and technology for IWD doesn’t require a lot of money, time, or effort: consider doing something simple like hosting a brown-bag lunch or pizza party, sending an email to staff, acknowledging an outstanding technical woman, supporting a women’s affinity group event, or blogging about it. Download the NCWIT International Women’s Day-in-a-Box for additional ideas and planning guides to help you generate and keep up momentum about it.

If you’re planning to host an event for International Women’s Day and would like to make copies of NCWIT resources available, please let us know: we’ll be happy to send you a free box of resources. Contact us at [email protected] to get started.

David Notkin, University of Washington Last year, with the launch of the Sit With Me campaign to NCWIT members, several organizations capitalized on IWD as an ideal moment for a Sit With Me event. Sit With Me uses an iconic Red Chair as a symbol and a gathering place for sharing, supporting, and advocating women’s technical contributions.

You too can “sit down to take a stand” on the importance of women’s participation in technology and computing by participating with the campaign in your own way: Buy, order, or find a Red Chair; download the toolkit for ideas; share your stories and photos. Check out Sit With Me celebrations at last year’s IWD from Qualcomm, Microsoft, and Facebook.

It may be no coincidence that NCWIT staff are hitting the road March 8 to participate in a bevy of conferences, speaking engagements, outreach events, and celebrations. Where will you be on March 8? We hope to see you out there. Please share your March 8 events with us on Facebook or Twitter so we can share them with the world. And if you’re planning to be in one of these locations, please say hello!
