| AWARD FOR ASPIRATIONS IN COMPUTING RECOGNIZES SEATTLE-AREA HIGH-SCHOOL GIRLS |
| Boulder, Colo. (November 19, 2007) - The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) today announced the winners of its second Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award recognizes young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests.
The Seattle-area award-winners are being acknowledged for their outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing; solid leadership ability; good academic history; and plans for post-secondary education. The award-winners are:
The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing is given out twice per year to nominees from the local metropolitan areas where NCWIT holds its bi-annual conferences. A ceremony celebrating the Seattle-area award-winners was held on November 7, 2007, at the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering at University of Washington. Ed Lazowska, the university's Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science & Engineering, presented the awards. Each winner received $500 and a commemorative award. The next award ceremony will be held in May 2008 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing was created to generate visibility for young women in their local communities, encourage their continued interest in computing, attract educational and corporate support, and emphasize the importance of women's participation in computer sciences at a personal level. NCWIT is a coalition of over 100 prominent corporations, academic institutions, government agencies, and non-profits working to increase women's participation in information technology (IT).
