Penn Engineering's mission is to create and disseminate scholarly research in both basic and applied areas, be an international center of engineering excellence, catalyze the region's technological innovation, design and deliver engineering education with rigor, breadth and relevance, and prepare students to become global leaders in all technology-based fields. Of those accepted for admission to the Class of 2015, 43.7 percent are black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American. Women comprise 53 percent of all students currently enrolled. With 165 research centers and institutes, research is a substantial and esteemed enterprise at Penn. As of fiscal year 2011, the research community includes over 4,000 faculty and over 1,100 postdoctoral fellows, 5,500 academic support staff and graduate student trainees, and a research budget of $901 million. The scale and interdisciplinary character of our research activities make Penn a nationally-ranked research university.
