NCWIT Award in Aspirations in Computing - North Central FL Affiliate

When I found out that I was a recipient of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing-North Central Florida Affiliate, I was surprised and elated. I personally had very limited experiences in computing, but aspire to become a computer engineer. To be commemorated for our aspirations as well as achievements in computing and technology is a very unique honor.

The event was a success! My fellow recipients and I had the opportunity to watch robotics demonstrations and explore what the USF Robobulls accomplishes-soccer playing robots. We were also introduced to LEFO Mindstorm robots and learned about FIRST Robotics.

I had a fantastic time meeting the other recipients, including educators! It is truly inspiring to know that girls my age have already accomplished a great deal and are making a difference in the lives of others through computing and technology. I noticed that many of us found that females excelled or perhaps dominated in our STEM classes, but it was unnerving to know few women actually enter the computing or engineering fields. It is very admirable that NCWIT cares and helps create the support that is lacking for women with aspirations in computing.

18 recipients of the North Central Florida Affiliate Award were recognized as well as a national winner and national runner-up. We received crystal plaques and goodies from local sponsors. I look forward to keeping in touch with other recipients and exploring the opportunities that NCWIT has helped me to realize!
