In 1963, Mecklenburg College and the Central Industrial Education Center were merged to establish Central Piedmont Community College, one of the first of the 58 colleges in the NC Community College System under the leadership of Dr. Richard Hagemeyer. In 1963, there were 23 degree and diploma programs; now there are more than 100 degree, diploma, and certificate programs, along with a comprehensive literacy program, and an extensive array of corporate and continuing education offerings. Central Piedmont Community College is an innovative and comprehensive college that advances the life-long educational development of students consistent with their needs, interests, and abilities while strengthening the economic, social, and cultural life of its diverse community. The College accomplishes this purpose by providing high-quality, flexible pre-baccalaureate and career-focused educational programs and services which are academically, geographically, and financially accessible. Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America. The founding of Cheyney University was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendent of the African race. The school began in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth and successfully provided free classical education for qualified young people. Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities who receive education instruction beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys.

Hunter College, located in the heart of bustling Manhattan, is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Founded in 1870, it is also one of the oldest public colleges in the country. Coastline Community College enables women in technology with the following initiatives. First and foremost, they have a partnership with University of California-Irvine Informatics Department. They share curriculum so our students can transfer as juniors to the university Informatics program. They have developed a brochure that is distributed to all of the local high schools and at career events and developed a recruitment video. Plus, they make presentations at the local high schools that include hands-on activities. We are planning to develop a tutoring program using upperclassmen from University of California-Irvine to help students with programming and math. We have a community in MYSPACE to generate interest in Computer Science. They use pairs programming and problem case-based learning to make the courses relevant to industry standards.
